About John Mackey
For
more than 10 years, John Mackey dominated opponents on the
football field with his athleticism, speed, and power in the
position of tight end. John stretched the field with an incredible
15.8 yards per catch. In 1973, John Mackey sued the NFL, challenging
their restrictive policies on free agency. The result changed
the rules of free agency that all NFL players enjoy today.
In 1992, he was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
In 2000, John Mackey was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia.
Today he lives in Baltimore, Maryland, with his wife Sylvia
and his children nearby. John's book, Blazing Trails
- Coming of Age in Football's Golden Era (Amazon
link),
describes his time in the NFL, overcoming other obstacles,
and much
more. He still makes
occasional public appearances and talks about his
days
in the
NFL. |
